SLS - Free Shampoo

The common idea for washing your hair implies having lots and lots of foam that makes us have the feeling that your hair is actually clean. But nothing is less true! This is a common misconception that is in our head because of those famous shampoo commercials like Herbal Essence. The truth is, that there is a certain chemical inside the shampoo that provides us with that foam. A chemical that is called sodium laureth sulfate or a milder form called sodium lauryl ether sulfate, also known as SLS (or SLES). And as we all know, chemicals aren’t really good for us, so think about what it is doing to your hair… Now I’m not saying that you should stop using it, it is still your own hair and what works best for you is more important! But for people that are concerned of their hair, who have troublesome hair, this could actually be the reason. So let me now point out what SLS (SLES) can actually cause your hair;

  • Hair loss
  • Dry head (scalp) that causes dandruff
  • Dry hair
  • Thinner hair

There is a solution however, gradually change your normal shampoo into a SLS – free shampoo, this is so your hair can get used to the difference in texture. If you go ‘cold turkey’ instantly, your hair is not going to adjust in a right way. You could even have a feeling of your hair still being dirty or something. The only known SLS-free shampoo I know in Holland are Wella Pro series, Aveda and dr. Organic from the Tuinen. If you want more information about this, I recommend you researching it for yourself a bit because there is a lot of information about it on the internet.
